Looks like we are going to see the might of the Japanese in the mobile industry soon. Mobile telecommunication heavyweights including NTT DOCOMO Inc., Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, NEC Corporation, Fujitsu Limited and Renesas Electronics Corporation, will be collaborating in order to develop a brand new mobile phone app platform.

The agreement was just announced to the public, including some tidbits such as the confirmation that the platform will have compatibility with both Linux and Symbian. The commercial launch for this new app platform is scheduled for the fiscal year’s second half (the financial year ends March 2012).

Considering the fact that Japanese electronics veterans are going to run the show, enhanced 3D graphics is a given and so is high end hardware capable of supporting high speed video playback and high end mobile media features.

This is a sound decision, considering that the companies involved all have prior experience using either the Symbian of Linux operating systems. This is also cost effective for the companies, because resources are shared and development time is cut significantly. This will also benefit consumers because the companies will have more time to focus on improved mobile phone features. Compatibility is possible for open operating systems (like the Android) but the decision is still up in the air.

The system is set to be offered all over the world. It is also slated to be used for all released mobile phones in the NTT DOCOMO network. This will potentially give rise to better apps for both the iPhone OS and the Android since they will have new competition to face. Software makers also have a new platform (and of course a new app store) to look forward to, which may give Flash developers hope after Apple just shut the door on their creations.
